FAQ
What's included in the newcomer health screen?
Your NP tailors the panel based on your answers. Standard tests include: CBC, metabolic panel, liver function, lipids, vitamin D, ferritin, HbA1c, TSH, hepatitis B surface antigen & surface antibody, hepatitis C antibody, and HIV screening. TB screening may be added if you answer yes to TB-endemic country history.
How long does it take?
Your NP reviews your intake within 24 hours during business hours (Mon–Fri, 8am–8pm). You'll receive your lab requisition by email once reviewed. After your lab visit, results are typically available within 24–72 hours.
Is this OHIP-covered?
The $89 service fee covers the NP review and lab requisition — this is private-pay. Most newcomer screening labs are OHIP-covered when there is clinical indication and you have a valid Ontario card. If you are covered by IFHP (Interim Federal Health Program) as a refugee, your labs are also typically covered.
I don't have OHIP yet — can I still use this service?
Yes. Without OHIP, you will pay out-of-pocket for the lab tests at LifeLabs or Dynacare (typically $30–200 depending on panel). IFHP may cover if you are a refugee claimant. Ask at the lab front desk what applies to your situation.
What if my results show something concerning?
If any results are abnormal, your NP will review them and send you a summary with recommended next steps — which may include referral to a specialist, starting treatment, or follow-up testing. For urgent findings, your NP will contact you directly.
Do I need to fast before the lab visit?
Some tests (lipids, glucose) are best done fasting 10–12 hours. Your NP will note which tests on your requisition require fasting. Water is always allowed. Your medications can generally be taken as usual — check with your NP if unsure.
