FAQ
Is OHIP covered?
TSH is OHIP-covered with clinical indication. Free T3, T4, and thyroid antibodies may be covered with hypothyroidism symptoms or prior abnormal TSH. Your NP will optimize coverage.
What is a normal TSH?
The standard reference range is 0.4–4.0 mIU/L, though many functional medicine MDs target 1.0–2.5 for optimal thyroid health. Your NP will interpret in full clinical context.
What does anti-TPO positive mean?
Elevated anti-TPO indicates Hashimoto's thyroiditis — an autoimmune attack on the thyroid gland. Many people with positive antibodies have normal TSH initially but may develop hypothyroidism over time.
Do I need to fast?
Fasting is not required for thyroid tests. TSH is ideally drawn in the morning and before any thyroid medication for monitoring purposes.
clinic.ca is staffed by Nurse Practitioners (NPs) registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the Extended Class. Ontario NPs are legally authorized to order laboratory tests, prescribe medications including controlled substances, diagnose illnesses, and refer patients to specialists. If a specific recipient (employer, insurance plan, or specialist office) requires a physician signature on your document, contact us and we will re-issue through a consulting physician at no additional cost or refund your fee in full.
